In business, much like in an orchestra, success comes from collaboration, innovation, and perseverance. Drawing on her personal experience as a musician and entrepreneur, Nicole Lander, co-founder of Battlefield Sports, shares valuable lessons learned from her time in an orchestra and how they apply to running a successful business. From leading a team through challenges to constantly seeking the next big idea, this blog explores how the principles of teamwork and creativity can drive your business to new heights.
I was at school and was representing my school as second clarinet in the orchestra.
We were playing at an eisteddfod, playing an adequate version of Bizet’s Carmen.
When suddenly the lights went out! Bam! TOTAL BLACKNESS.
I stopped.
I had no idea.
I thought: “Oh! That’s not supposed to happen.”
But my fellow orchestra members kept on. They know the score. They kept playing the music.
So, after a moment, I thought: “I better keep on going too!” And so, we carried on.
I think running a business is a bit like playing in an orchestra. Everybody has their role, even a second clarinet.
Renowned entrepreneur Daniel Priestly says, “The conductor in the orchestra can’t play all the instruments. Maybe he or she is good at one instrument. But their ability to bring in the best in the world at that instrument is what makes a great conductor. The ability to enroll people [into their big idea].”
I’m Nicole Lander, I’m the co-founder of Battlefield Sports.
We started with a few thousand bucks and a big idea: to take a video game and experience it live.
(Where people throw themselves off a large bridge or some sort of high emplacement, with rubber bands around their ankles. And they just throw themselves off!! Whoever would have thought that was a business?)
Our forest laser tag business started at the AJ Hackett venue.
Laser Tag is a game.
Our game is all about less screen time and more green time.
Our innovation took the fun outside. From the dark, foggy maze of a traditional laser tag arena, taking the gaming into the forest.
Our business started because of the Internet. I am a storyteller and a gamer. I started playing role-playing games when I was at University.
Remember Dungeons & Dragons?
As the video game revolution took place, I migrated into playing more video games.
We decided, that maybe we could play video games live. A live-action role-play. Today we have a few parts of the business.
Our technology uses infrared, like a TV remote. We also use digital radio feedback.
So you know when you’ve tagged the opposition.
We believe in “every game, every gamer”.

Whether is it a 5-minute game at a school fete. Or a 12-hour endurance bivouac event. We believe that we want every single gamer to enjoy their experience.
Sure we make guns. (Yep, I’m a gun-runner!)
But what we actually do is create happy memories.
That’s our product.
We want our guests to have one of those fantastic memories of their life. One of those handful of times that you will remember for the rest of your life.
Whether it is a birthday party or a corporate teambuilding experience. We’ve had a few challenges, just like any business.
Yes, the R&D Tax Incentive is fantastic. Apply for it, if you’re eligible! Battlefield Sports has been exporting since 2002.
We’ve exported to more than 55 countries. Our biggest markets are the USA, UK, and European markets.
Laser Tag in a Box has entertained more than 28,000 events & counting!
Our most popular age is 10 years old. It’s basically like a bell curve. We’ve been booked for a one-year-old party. We’ve had someone who was 88 come and play.
But our most common age is 10 or 11. We’ve sold to theme parks, caravan parks, and summer camps.
We’ve sold to schools and vacation cares. We have sold to bowling alleys.
We’ve sold to P&O Cruises.
Our technology works both indoors and outdoors.
The interesting thing about our technology is that it’s 100% transportable.
Say you have an indoor sports center, you can reuse the space.
Monday to Thursday you can run fixtures of basketball or indoor soccer or whatever. Then on the weekend, if your facility is a bit quiet, you can bump in laser tag. This will leverage the infrastructure you have.
We are always seeking the next big thing.
