Live Action Role Playing taken to the next level!

The Fantasy Boom!

The popularity of the fantasy genre is on the rise. People from all walks of life are interested in experiencing magic and adventure.

Sesaons one of the TV show Game of Thrones took the world by storm. By the end of its run, it was one of the most-watched TV shows of all time. The fantasy boom did not end with Game of Thrones, however.

"In each of the last five years, sales of 'Dungeons and Dragons' merchandise has grown by double digits," said Sarah Whitten from CNBC. "The massive sales boom can be attributed to the launch of the fifth edition of the game in 2014 and to 'Dungeons and Dragons' shows like 'Critical Role.'"

The game was further popularised by the hit show Stranger Things, which featured a group of boys who played the original Dungeons and Dragons.

This resurgence prompted the creation of blockbuster movies such as Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023) and video games like Baldur's Gate 3 (2023).

IGN crowned Baldur's Gate III as Game of the Year in 2023.

"The role-playing game [...] has quickly become one of the top 10 most-played Steam games ever," says Jason Schreier writing for Bloomberg

In 2022, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II made the top sales of the year, with the game continuing its success in 2023. Elden Ring came runner-up and still made the Top 20 the following year.

In 2023, Hogwarts Legacy unexpectedly beat out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. The third place went to another fantasy franchise: Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

But is LARPing popular? Yes! Absolutely!

The trends are clear: Fantasy is in and it is here to stay.

Founded in 1996, Canada’s Bicolline takes place across a huge purpose-built landscape including two villages and 220+ permanent structures. In 2022, Bicolline's biggest event, Grande Bataille, counted more than 4000 participants! Many more attend the LARP to experience medieval fairs, role-play, and fantasy combat.

"An entirely new generation of players, who had gotten involved in the newly popular ‘nerd hobbies’ during the pandemic, were now champing at the bit for new experiences outside their claustrophobic four walls," said Medieval Ware.

Bring the fun of LARPing to a wider market.

Traditional LARP, while fun, has a few limitations.

It relies on an honor system. Participants are expected to track their health points and even those who aren't trying to chest can easily lose track of their score in the heat of combat. This doesn't work for a commercial operation.

Our system revolves around this issue with health points tracked by the computer in the player's chest.

Many people don't want to be hit. Getting thumped is just about guaranteed in a full-tilt LARP. Many participants wear armor, but walking away with bruises isn't unusual. For the average customer, this isn't appealing.

Our system lets players experience the magic of a fantasy adventure without contact.

Under 18s (or 16s, depending on your country) cannot participate. Due to the previous issues, many LARPs cannot allow younger players. This cuts out a large portion of the market.

The Battlefield Sports fantasy system is safe for anyone to play - and fun.

What it's like playing a Tech-Assisted LARP

Basics of Adventuring

Every adventure has a Staff. When the adventure starts, they have 100 Health Points.

Armor works by absorbing damage. You can configure the hit points. Plus there are pre-set characters so you can quickly start a new live-action role-playing.

Each staff is set to a character. There are four characters: Flame Mage, Healer, Sorcerer, and Monk. The characters each have a special ability that makes their playing experience unique. Each ability can be upgraded to have more impact, such as doing more damage.

Every time an adventuring is hit during the adventure, they will take damage. When hit a gamer will lose some Health Points. Once their Health Points reach zero, they are "dead". Adventurers will need to return to base camp to revive. Once they get close enough to the base, they will be back to 100 Health Points.

The damage-dying-revive sequence is done entirely via computer. This is a key aspect of player engagement! When you get a player out, they go out! There is no need to monitor the dead or rely on an honor system.

  Every Player Plays Every Minute

Even when "dead" adventurers have something to do. They walk (or run!) back to their base camp.

If you're players are waiting around, you have bored players!

With the Battlefield Sports system, that isn't an issue. The sooner they are back to their base, the sooner they are in the game once more.

Meet the Characters:

These characters are the building blocks for players to layer on their own story, or simply to pick up a staff and start playing.

Every character has a special ability that sets them out from the rest. The healers, for example, can heal their allies.

Each character has a base attack, a surge attack, and a means of defense. If a player does nothing for 4 seconds, their surge attack is prepared. Their next attack will use the surge, rather than their base attack. This means a new player can simply swing their staff and it will attack, even if they aren't sure what they're doing! Once they have a handle on the game, they can strategize on when they want to use their surge.

Flame Mage

The Flame Mage casts fire-based spells. They are good at middle-distance combat. Their surge attack does splash damage. If two opponents are standing beside each other, they both take damage!

Abilities:

Flame Strike

 Fire Ball: splash damage

Shield Spell

Sorcerer

The Sorcerer uses ice and lightning magic. They are the long-range expert. Their surge attack is the only long-ranged attack in the game, which can make them quite deadly!

Abilities:

Ice Blast

Lightning Bolt: long range

Protection Ring

Monk

The Monk character is a nimble, melee-based character. While this system is a non-contact game, the Monk will still want to get to about arms reach. The Monk has a chance of dodging any attack.

Abilities:

Quarter Staff

Energy Blast

Dodge: % chance of taking no damage

Healer

The Healer is a vital part of any adventuring party. They keep their teammates in combat and can heal their enemies at the same time! They are good middle-range fighters.

Abilities:

Scorch

Heal/Harm: heals allies, hurts enemies

Gambeson

Success Factor #1: Hit Feedback & Sound Effects

The key innovation of the SATR system is "hit feedback".

When an adventurer hit their opponent their staff will talk to them. This gives an instant thrill!

Here's an example of some sound effects they will hear:

Another favorite is the voice-over, "You're dead", which plays every time a dead adventurer attempts an attack.

This makes group organization super easy. If an adventurer is dead, they're dead! No questions. No arguments. Plenty of fun.

Success Factor #2: Compelling Adventures

Battlefield Sports has developed several compelling adventures that are simple to run, easy to duplicate, and - most importantly - guaranteed to engage your customers.

These adventures have been designed to be straightforward and thrilling.

Adventure Spotlight: Treasure Hunt

Gather all adventuring parties, there is a dragon's horde worth of gold to collect!

The SATR system supports up to seven teams at once. This means you can have several adventuring parties facing each other, all on the same field of play.

This adventure promises lots of action with two teams or seven.

At the center of the field, the operator places a Treasure Chest. Every 5 seconds, the chest will fill with 10 Gold Pieces. If an adventurer hits the chest with one of their attacks, they collect the gold. They can grab as much gold as they want, but they'll need to get it back to their base.

Every team has a chest, called a Vault. Only gold stored in the Vault counts towards a party's victory.

Once an adventurer has gold, they can dash back to their Vault and hit that with an attack. This deposits the gold. However! The gold is far from safe.

Adventurers can choose to raid the other parties' Vaults. They can steal 50 Gold at a time.

This an awesome, dynamic adventure that requires teamwork to achieve victory.

Success Factor #2: Battle Chests

Battle Chests are devices used to run a Fantasy LARP experience efficiently.

One of the primary jobs of a Battle Chest is to revive the adventurers. Unlike with a lot of LARPs, where players must wait on the field for a set amount of time (for example, 1 minute), adventurers return to the Battle Chest, at their base camp, and are back into the adventure.

This gives the game flow.

Adventurers can work together to push back their opponents, only for the enemy party to come back in force!

The Battle Chest keeps track of the times it revives an adventurer.

Battle Chests change the game. Because a staff member isn't required to watch players or indicate to them when they can return to the adventure, LARP adventures can be operated with very few organizers.  Only one organizer is needed up for to 25 players. And with an assistant, an organizer can typically handle up to 80 people at once.·

Switch Box Team

This option makes LARP adventures so easy to run.

When an adventure is over, choose the "Switch Box Team" on your controller, and - hey, presto! - the teams have switched on the boxes. There's no need to move any equipment around and can be done while adventurers swap sides.

We always recommend that the teams always start at a new location for each adventure. For example, when playing Treasure Hunt, parties start at each end. When the first round is over, they swap ends and do it again. This keeps the adventure new and exciting.

Recommended Options

Setting up a new adventure is quick and efficient.

When the user switches on the Battle Chest, it will display a simple menu with all the presets. For example: Vault and Gold Drop (used in Treasure Hunt).  The user finds the setting they need and then presses select.

The Battle Chest then launches with all the settings they need to run the adventure in a couple of seconds.  Furthermore, the Battle Chest can be set to the exact requirement and "locked".  This means the moment it's switched on, it loads the chosen setting without needing to press any buttons or go through any menus. Since it's "locked" it would need to be "unlocked" via a Full Controller to change the setting.

So you can set & forget!

This is great for a LARP group that already has their adventures and just needs a Chest to revive the adventurers.

Mystery Chest: Level up the Adventure

Inspired by TTRPGs and video games, adventurers can level up their weapons with the Mystery Chest.

Choose this setting on the Chest Boxes and place the Chest an equal distance from each party's starting position.

Every character has three emulations: primary attack, surge attack, and defense. As standard, they all start with Common versions of all these weapons. However, if they get to the chest (and are lucky!) they can collect a random upgrade.

The upgrades are all linked to that character's emulations. For example, if a Flame Mage reaches the Mystery Chest they will only receive an upgrade to their Flame Strike, Fireball, or Shield Spell. Meanwhile, their teammate beside them will collect items that match their character.

The upgrades are categorized by rarity.

A Rare Scorch does more damage than a Common Scorch. However, the rarer the emulation, the less chance it will appear in the Mystery Chest.

Adventurers will have to try their luck a few times before they upgrade their three emulations.

And, of course, the other party is trying to do the same thing!

This creates a secondary objective and adds a new paradigm to the adventure.

Success Factor #3: Adventure Props

Battlefield Sports has several adventures that are both easy to set up and fun to play.

Each adventure comes with a themed map and instructions for the players.

(generic handouts that people could receive as part of their package that explains the adventures “in the world”

A piece of card the players can roleplay with. In which case this would be a good selling point.

Another example is having a map done like a proper fantasy map which depicts the adventure.

An indoor “dungeon” could be mimicked with our inflatable walls. An outdoor version could just have some generic “woods”.

Success Factor #4: VICTORY!

The Battlefield Sports brand is founded on Team Victories.

Instead of a single player ranking at the top of a leaderboard, an entire team (AKA "adventuring party") gets the win. After all, there is nothing like the thrill of "Victory!!".

If the game has two teams, that means half the players win every round. WOW!

This system supports up to 7 teams. Perfect for LARPs with smaller groups all battling it out.

The standard system allows the operator to announce the winning team. The Controller will ask if it should announce the winner, if yes, all the wands on the field will say "Red Team is Victorious" or "Blue Team is Victorious".

That way everyone knows who won at the same time.

 Cue the cheers.

The Scoreboard

With the scoreboard, you can bring the victory to the big screen. The Scoreboard gives real-time updates throughout the game on the scores, letting any spectators know how well each team is doing.

When the game is over, players can come back and find the names of their wands. The Scoreboard automatically assigns the wands an "alias" if it doesn't already have one (no configuration necessary).  The most helpful player for each team will have their alias appear on the screen. For Treasure Hunt, this is the adventurer that deposited the most gold into their team's Vault.

Advanced Scoreboard

Battlefield Sports' also has a more advanced Scoreboard (called SATR-go) that lets you set the ALIAS yourself. For example, if the adventurer has a character name, you can assign this via the Scoreboard.
