BATTLEFIELD SUCCESS STORY: FROM STAGNANT TO MR. FANTASTIC...

Tom Oakes was a landscape gardener before starting his mobile laser tag business.

He was searching for an alternative business that could give him a lifestyle change.

He discovered Battlefield Sports in January 2003 with some 'optimistic dreaming' about a profitable weekend business.

"I was working too many hours with too little growth in my landscaping business," Tom recalls.

"At the time, my son was 13, and I felt that I needed to spend more time with him.

Tom originally ordered some of the "Berserker" gaming guns. (This model has been discontinued.) They were actually made with marine ply. But over the years, he upgraded his arsenal to feature the Cobra Tagger. He now has more than 80 gaming guns and accessories.

"My landscape business, although technically successful, had stagnant growth, and therefore didn't allow me to spend any less time in the business to keep it going."

"I was prepared to phase down the landscape business but needed a business that would provide me with more personal time and provide my family with a reasonable

income," said Tom. Today, Tom works with his son in the business.

"My first party was all 10-year-old girls. They had a blast, just like every lady's party," said Tom. Tom specializes in backyard parties in the Washington, D.C. area and has now expanded to serve the Florida area as well. His small business is still going great guns (pardon the pun).
